Ten chapters

In December 2013, in a village in Andhra Pradesh, somebody decided to build a commerce institute where the students already were, instead of where institutes usually get built. Ten short chapters on what happened next.

Chapter 01/The Question

Students left the villages to study. Faculty left to teach. Everybody agreed this was simply how it worked.

  • A pattern nobody had questioned.

Rural districts sent their best to the cities, and the cities kept them. Rent went to people who were already doing well. Opportunity pooled where opportunity already was.

Then somebody turned the question around. If students and teachers will travel this far to sit in one room together, does that room have to be in a city?

No one had a good answer to that. That was the opening.

Chapter 02/The Idea That Would Not Leave

Most ideas pass. This one kept coming back.

It came back at night, and in the middle of other work, and every time the question got asked again and still nobody answered it.

On 25 December 2013, in the village of Nuzvid, it stopped being an idea. There was no building. No funding. No guarantee that a single student would walk through a door, because there was not yet a door.

An idea and a decision. That turned out to be enough to start with.

Chapter 03/The First Classroom

The first classroom had no walls. It had a tree.

Branches overhead, bare ground underneath. Students sat on the earth with their books open. No desks, no microphone, no fan. Just a voice, and whoever turned up to hear it.

Nobody planned it that way. There was a tree and there were students, and waiting for a building would have meant waiting years.

It worked anyway.

Chapter 04/The Thin Years

There were months when it very nearly stopped.

Money was short. Support was uncertain. There was no plan for what happened if the next batch did not fill, because there was no room in the budget for a plan.

What held it together was a plain belief: help people, and help finds its way back to you. Every time the road ran out, somebody turned up holding a piece of it.

None of that was owed to anybody. It happened anyway.

Chapter 05/When the Whisper Became a Voice

“A college? In a rural area?” “Will students really come?” “Will faculty travel all the way to Nuzvid?”

Fair questions, all of them. They were answered slowly, without argument, by results.

One student's marks, then a batch's. Parents who had heard about the place from other parents. The doubt was never defeated. It just quietly went out of date.

What began as a rumour in one district became a name people said out loud.

Chapter 06/The Hands That Built It

No institution is built by one person, and this one was built by a great many.

  • Teachers.
  • Staff.
  • Supporters.
  • Believers.

Faculty who came when there was almost nothing to come to. Staff who stayed through the thin years on trust. Families who sent a child on somebody else's word.

A wall is only ever its bricks. Take away any one of them and it is a different wall.

Chapter 07/It Did Not Stay in Nuzvid

The idea started travelling, and it kept going.

From the Telugu states it reached Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, West Bengal, Odisha, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The strange part is what did not change. The teaching that worked under a tree in one village is the same teaching that works everywhere it has gone since.

The address kept changing. The idea did not.

Chapter 08/More Than a Workplace

Count only the students and you miss half of it.

In a district where a good job was something you left home to find, the institution now employs more than 150 people directly.

For those families that is not a line in a report. It is a salary that arrives, a house that stays, a reason to build a life in the place you were born in.

The dream ended up feeding the people who built it.

Chapter 09/The Courage to Begin

The people who asked whether this would ever work now send their own children here.

They were not wrong to ask. In 2013 there was no evidence. There rarely is.

Big things do not begin with certainty. They begin with somebody willing to take a step while the road ahead is still dark.

The road shows up after you start walking. Not before.

Chapter 10/The Message of the Tree

Nobody is coming to fix your district for you.

Nothing changes because it was discussed. It changes when somebody acts, carries the risk, and begins.

If you run an institution, or you want to, we would rather you built it in a place like Nuzvid than in a city that already has twenty.

Come and ask us how. We will tell you everything we know.

What it came to

  • 13

    Years since the first class

December 2013 to today. This one is just arithmetic.

  • 1,00,000+

    Students taught

Across every course, campus and batch.

  • 150+

    People employed

Direct jobs in a district where good ones were scarce.

  • 11

    States reached

Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu, Delhi to Kerala.

Portrait
to come

The one who went first

“Education is not just about teaching. It's about inspiring lives to achieve more than they ever imagined.”

The founder/BCCA, Nuzvid

The decision on 25 December 2013 was one person's. Everything after it belonged to a great many people, but somebody had to move first, and moving first is the part that costs.

He still teaches. That is worth knowing about a man who could have stopped years ago and run the place from an office instead.

Where the classes have been

Same institution. Six different rooms.

  • 2013

    The first classroom
  • 2014

    Early batches
  • The old campus
  • The campus today
  • Smart classrooms
  • The library

What the place runs on

Cultivate. Compete. Conquer. And three more nobody put on the logo.

  • 01

    Cultivate

Understand the concept and the answer follows. Learn it the other way round and you are memorising for one exam.

  • 02

    Compete

The only comparison worth making is with the student you were at the last test.

  • 03

    Conquer

Ranks are not the point. They are the proof, and we take them seriously for exactly that reason.

  • 04

    Say it straight

Students and parents get what we actually think, including when the honest answer is not the welcome one.

  • 05

    New when it teaches better

Smart classrooms, test analytics, recorded lectures. We take up a thing when it helps a student, not when it looks modern.

  • 06

    The student in the room

Every decision gets checked against one question, and that is the question.

The next chapter

Come and see where it started.

If you are choosing where to study, come and look at the place. If you are thinking of building something like this in a district of your own, come and ask us how. Both conversations are worth our time.
